The AsRSG is the IUCN SSC's recognised authority on Asian rhinos — the neutral, science-based body that range-state governments, protected-area authorities and conservation partners turn to for guidance. Modest, catalytic funding lets it convene that expertise and turn it into action.
Three species, three trajectories
| Species | IUCN Red List | Wild population | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greater one-horned rhinoceros | Vulnerable | 4,075 | India, Nepal |
| Sumatran rhinoceros | Critically Endangered | 34–47 | Indonesia |
| Javan rhinoceros | Critically Endangered | Fewer than 50 | Indonesia |
The greater one-horned rhino is one of Asia's great recovery stories. The Javan and Sumatran rhinos remain on the edge of extinction — the Javan population having fallen from 76 to roughly 50 following a poaching crisis.
Why invest through the AsRSG
As the IUCN SSC's recognised authority on Asian rhinos, the AsRSG is trusted by governments and partners across the range states. It is now organised around seven working groups — three for the species and four functional. Catalytic funding allows the group to convene this expertise across India, Nepal and Indonesia, align partners behind shared priorities, advise governments directly, and turn expert consensus into national action plans and technical reviews that mobilise far larger downstream investment.
