Dr Sunarto Sunarto

Sunarto, Ph.D., is a wildlife ecologist currently working for Permian Global. He co-initiated and currently Co-Chairing IUCN Indonesia Species Specialist Group (IdSSG). Previously worked with WWF, he served as a coordinator for the team that developed the 2014 Survey and Monitoring Guideline for Sumatran Rhinos, which standardized scientific techniques for population monitoring and management. His work focuses on supporting field teams and assisting national policy-level initiatives to help safeguard rhinos and other wildlife in Indonesia. He has authored several scientific studies on wildlife, including co-authoring research published in Conservation Letters regarding tsunami risks to Javan rhinos. Additionally, he contributes popular articles on Sumatran and Javan rhinos to outlets such as The Conversation and The Jakarta Post to promote urgent action for rhino recovery. Through these collaborations and publications, he assists in providing the scientific data and public awareness needed for effective conservation strategies.
