AsRSG meets Indonesia's Minister of Forestry on rhino recovery

The Chair met Hon. Minister Raja Juli Antoni in Jakarta and delivered the AsRSG briefing note on Sumatran and Javan rhino recovery.

The Chair of the AsRSG, Dr A. Christy Williams, met the Hon. Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, in Jakarta on 6 May 2026 and delivered the AsRSG briefing note on Sumatran and Javan rhino recovery.

The briefing focused on three areas:

  1. Conservation-led leadership.
  2. Conservation breeding, assisted reproductive technology, and second-habitat planning for the Javan rhino.
  3. Innovative financing.

The briefing was reviewed and strengthened by Pak Anwar Purwoto, Pak Inov of the International Rhino Foundation Indonesia, and Barney Long of Re:wild.

A joint follow-up note was subsequently submitted to the Minister together with the IUCN SSC Asian Elephant Specialist Group, chaired by Heidi Riddle. The Minister’s office has acknowledged receipt, and both specialist groups stand ready to support a focused technical follow-up convened by the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation.

During the same visit the Chair met the YABI team, Pak Anwar Purwoto and Heidi Riddle in Jakarta between 5 and 7 May.
