Dr Frederike Von Houwald

Friederike von Houwald is a German veterinarian and rhino conservation specialist with more than two decades of experience in zoo management, rhino husbandry, and international species conservation. She studied veterinary medicine at FU Berlin, completed an MSc in Wild Animal Health at the Zoological Society of London, and carried out doctoral research on foot problems in greater one-horned rhinoceroses in Zürich. From 2001 to 2021, she served as Curator at Zoo Basel, and from 2008 to 2021 chaired the EAZA Rhino TAG and managed the international studbook for the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Since 2008, she has worked globally as a rhino husbandry consultant and has been an IUCN Rhino Specialist Group member since 2014. In 2021, she became Director of Bern Animal Park in Switzerland.
